Mike Smiechowski heads into his first season as an Assistant Swimming Coach and Aquatics Intern for Villanova in 2013-14. Smiechowski brings extensive knowledge from both assistant coach and student-athlete perspectives to the Wildcats.
Before arriving at Villanova, served as the interim assistant coach at the Sanford Swim Club, where he was in charge of coaching the senior group. He also served as an assistant coach at Iowa Lakes Community College in 2012. There, Smiechowski coached the distance group, as well as worked with admissions and housing for the student-athletes. Also in 2012, he served as a volunteer assistant coach at UNC-Wilmington, where he ran dry land practices and assisted coaches on the pool deck.
Prior to his coaching career, Smiechowski swam as a collegiate student-athlete for three years at UNC-Wilmington from 2009-12. He was a member of three consecutive CAA Championship teams, and finished his career ranked in the university's top 10 times in three events (1650 free, 1000 free, 500 free). Smiechowski served as team captain for the 2011-12 season. Prior to attending UNC-Wilmington, he swam at Niagara University in 2008-09, in which he set three school records (1650 free, 1000 free, 200 fly).
Smiechowski holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology from UNC-Wilmington. He is currently pursuing a Master of Education degree in Higher Education Leadership from Iowa State University, with expected completion in Dec. 2013.
