Head Coach

Ed Bartsch enters his sixth season as head coach of the Villanova swimming and diving program in 1999. In his first five seasons, Bartsch has helped make the Wildcat swimming and diving name synonymous with success. This past season, Bartsch led the Villanova women's team to a second place finish at the Big East Championships, with the men finishing ninth. In 1995 and 1996, he guided the Wildcat women to their fourth and fifth consecutive Big East Conference Championship titles and the men to two straight fourth place finishes in the Big East.

Since the start of his tenure as head coach of the Wildcats, Bartsch has continued to add to the tradition that is the Villanova swimming and diving program. He has had 24 Big East Individual Champions and 17 Big East relay team titles. On the national scene, Bartsch has been just as successful. This past season, freshman Maddy Crippen became only the second Villanova female ever to win an NCAA title. In addition, he has helped lead 11 athletes to earn All-America distinction. His swimmers pride themselves not only on their accomplishments in the pool, but on successes they have in the classroom as well. Since 1994 when Bartsch arrived at Villanova, four swimmers have garnered NCAA Academic All-America honors, two have won the Big East Post-Graduate Scholarship, one has earned an NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship and another was named a Big East Target Athlete of the Year. As he enters his fifth season on the Main Line, expectations look to be just as great both in the pool and in the classroom.

Bartsch took over at the Wildcat helm in 1994 following a four-year stint as the associate head coach of the men's swim team at the University of Southern California. While at USC, he helped legendary coach Peter Daland lead the team to two second place NCAA finishes. During that time, he was also the head coach of Team Trojan, a Los Angeles based swim club. Under Bartsch's direction, Team Trojan swimmers achieved one world record, two American records, four individual national championships, and had more than 20 national championship finalists. Six of the team members represented their countries in the 1992 Olympic Games.

Aside from his collegiate and club work in the United States, Bartsch has also spent a great deal of time performing international work. In the summer of 1990, he conducted clinics for both coaches and swimmers throughout India. In 1995, Bartsch traveled to the Philippines and conducted a series of coaches clinics under the direction and sponsorship of FINA, the world governing body for swimming.

In 1992, Bartsch was head coach of the Philippine Olympic Swim Team that competed in the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona. At the 1992 Olympic Games, his team set eight Philippine national records. They also broke 16 Philippine national records during a year-long training period used in preparation for the Games.

In addition to his coaching, Bartsch was also a successful collegiate swimmer at the University of Michigan where he served as team captain during his senior year. At Michigan, Bartsch was an NCAA 200-yard backstroke champion and a Pan American Games gold medal winner in the 100-meter backstroke. He has also won the National AAU 200-yard backstroke title.

Bartsch received his bachelor's degree in literature science and arts from Michigan in 1965, and followed that with an MBA from Southern Methodist University in 1968. He went on to complete two years of post-master studies in finance. Bartsch is single and currently resides in Oreland, Pa.
