Wildcats Armed And Dangerous With Armitage

Villanova, Pa.-- Reaching All-American, All-State, and All-League status at the prep level, Villanova freshman swimmer Katie Armitage (North Haven, Ct./ North Haven High School) is already making it big on the collegiate level as well.

At the University of Virginia Invitational on Dec. 4-6, Armitage helped lead the Wildcats to a third place finish against the likes of Princeton, Virginia and George Washington. Armitage tallied individual victories in the 200 yard individual medley (2:04.89) and the 400 yard individual medley (4:21.65) events.

Armitage made an immediate impact at Villanova, even in her first collegiate meet on Oct. 25, where she swam to victory in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:06.42) over Penn State and Illinois and a victory in the 400 yard individual medley (4:26.64) over Penn State. She then went on to tally victories in the 200 yard individual medley (2:08.70) in the season's first home meet against LaSalle on Oct. 31 and in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:13.92) versus the University of Maryland-Baltimore County on Nov. 7.

Armitage presently holds eight Villanova season bests so far in 1997. She has the Wildcat top times in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:22.02) at the Virginia Invitational, the 500 yard freestyle (4:56.73) at the Nike Cup on Nov. 20-22, the 200 yard individual medley (2:04.89) at the Virginia Invitational, the 400 yard individual medley (4:26.61) at Penn State, the 1000 yard freestyle (10:05.87) against Yale, the 100 yard breaststroke (1:06.99) at Penn State, the 400 yard individual medley (4:21.65) at the Virginia Invitational and in the 1,650 yard freestyle (16:45.97) at the Nike Cup.

Armitage and the Wildcats head to Boca Raton, FL., for Christmas training from Dec. 26 through Jan. 11. They will resume their season on Jan. 10 in Boca Raton against Nebraska, Purdue and Florida Atlantic.
