Freshman Phenom Making Immediate Impact
VILLANOVA, Pa.--Freshman swimmer Kristen Olson from Aliquippa, Pa. and Moon Area High School has made an immediate impact upon the success of the Villanova women's swimming and diving team in 1997.
A Pennsylvania state high school champion in the 50 yard freestyle as a senior at Moon Area High School and a high school All-American in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events as a sophomore, junior and senior, Olson has made her transition to the college level an easy one.
Swimming the sprint freestyle events for the Wildcats, Olson has played a key role in the Villanova women's swimming and diving team's dual-meet victories over LaSalle, UMBC and Yale this season.
In her first collegiate meet against Illinois and Penn State held at Penn State on Oct. 25, Olson finished first in both the 100 yard freestyle (52.11) and the 200 yard freestyle (1:52.75).
In the Wildcats' first victory of the 1997 season on Oct. 31 versus LaSalle, she posted another victory in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 52.15.
Against UMBC on Friday, Nov. 7, Olson notched her second dual victory meet of her college career. She tallied wins in both the 50 yard freestyle (24.10) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:08.10).
In relay competition, Olson along with Jackie Gruters, Kristin Stretanski and Danielle Macejka comprised the Wildcat squad that beat the Retrievers in the 400 yard relay medley with a time of 4:00.14.
This past week on Nov. 25 against Yale, Olson was once again a dual event winner, taking the 100 yard freestyle (52.62) and the 200 yard freestyle (1:53.99). She also helped the Wildcat relay squad win the 200 yard relay medley with a time of 1:49.16.
Olson and the Villanova swimming and diving team will travel to Virginia next for the University of Virginia Invitational, to be held on Dec. 4-6.
