Villanova Swimming and Diving Teams Set to Open Season
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The Villanova University men and women's swimming and diving teams will open up their season on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Penn State. The Wildcat women will face off against the host Nittany Lions and the University of Illinois in a double dual meet at noon.
The Villanova men will meet Penn State on Saturday, at 3 p.m.
Last season against Penn State, the Villanova women's swimming and diving team lost to the Nittany Lions 188-98, while the men's team lost 143-108.
"On the men's side, traditionally Penn State has had much more depth in many of the strokes and that might still be true, but we have improved ourselves in a way that we should be much more competitive," said head coach Ed Bartsch. "With the women, the Penn State and Illinois teams are about equal in strength, and they are a little deeper all the way through than we are. Our goal is to outswim them and score more points in the swimming events. We haven't beaten Penn State in 30 years, but I think we can give them a race this season."
The Villanova swimming and diving team enters the 1997-98 season, looking to improve upon their performances of a year ago. In 1996-97, the Wildcat women finished in third place at the Big East Championships, ending their consecutive Big East title streak at five. The men finished in sixth place in the Big East, falling two spots from the previous season.
