Track and Field Places Well over Weekend

March 9, 1998

Both the Wildcat men and women recorded top 15 finishes at the IC4A and ECAC Indoor Championships, held this past weekend. The Wildcat men placed 12th overall with 18 points, while the women posted a 23-point effort to finish 14th of the 45 squads.

The men were paced by Jermaine Deans (Jr., Kingston, Jamaica) and Kareem Archer (Sr., Plainfield, N.J.). Deans put in another spectacular effort, capturing the triple jump individual championship in a tremendous leap of 52-10.0 and qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Deans, also the Big East Champion in the event, reset his personal best and posted one of the longest jumps in the nation this season. Additionally, his jump of 52-10.00 is the longest by a Wildcat since the 1979 season when Nate Cooper set a school record with a mark of 56-1.5 at the NCAA Championships.

Archer was equally impressive, narrowly missing the title in the 55m high hurdles with a run of 7.23 in the finals. His performance was a personal best and earned him a spot in the event next week at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. Archer's run also rates among the best ever in Villanova history, ranking as the best since Martin Booker also ran 7.23 at the Big East Championships in 1986.

On the women's side, Carmen Douma (So., Cambridge, Ontario) continued to impress, as she won the mile in 4:37.36.That time is an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships, and the fastest run in the event by a Villanova woman all season. In addition, Douma's effort ranks No. 13 in Wildcat history, behind only Vicki Huber, Sonia O'Sullivan and Brigid Leddy.

Kristen Nicolini (Jr., Annapolis, Md.) also had a strong showing, finishing third overall in the mile in 4:50.04, an NCAA provisional qualifier, and her fastest time in the event all season. Marlena Robinson (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) pulled double duty, competing in both the long and triple jumps. The rookie placed third in the long jump in 18-10.0 and ninth in the triple in 38-4.75. Another freshman, Jessica Franks (Fr., Lansdale, Pa.) scored with an eighth-place run in the 500m in 1:16.17, one of her best performances all season.

The NCAA Championships are March 13-14, in Indianapolis, Ind.
