On Saturday, Jan. 8, the Villanova men's track & Field team competed in the Winter Invitational held at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. The Wildcats were led by Ben Showers (So., West Chester, Pa.) who won the mile in 4:23.35. Showers edged out fellow Villanovan Tom Parlapiano (Fr., Honeybrook, Pa.) who was timed in 4:23.97. Freshman Jon Fasulo (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) was the third Wildcat to run the mile, earning a 14th place finish in 4:39.05.

In the 800 meter run, Villanova got a strong performance from senior Greg Young (Wilmington, Mass.) who placed second in 1:54.93. Freshman Pat Hickey (Cheyenne, Wyoming) tallied an 11th place effort in the 800 meters with a clocking of 1:59.81. Villanova runners placed fourth and fifth in the 1,000 meter run, with Brian Anderson (Fr., Avon Lake, Ohio) running a time of 2:35.93 and James Copperthwaite (So., Allenhurst, N.J.) being timed in 2:35.34.

Highlighting the field events was sophomore Mark Blattner (Phoenixville, Pa.) who took home a pair of second place finishes. Blattner threw the shot put 14.66m to place second and he had a mark of 14.68m in the weight throw to finish second. Rookie Pat Moore (Upper Dublin, Pa.) also competed in the shot put, where he was third with a throw of 13.58m. Also in the field events, senior Jermaine Deans (Kingston, Jamaica) had a jump of 6.77m in the long jump competition to finish eighth.

Other Wildcat participants include Antoine Johnson (So., Tuckahoe, N.Y.) who was eighth in the 60 meter high hurdles in 8.31, Gary Thau (Jr., Flemington, N.J.) who ran 51.58 to place 13th in the 400 meter run and Brian Powell (So., Kennett Square, Pa.) who was 14th in the 200 meters in 23.26. In the 3,000 meter run, Dan Tantino (So., North Wales, Pa.) and Chris Johnson (Fr., Easton, Mass.) finished ninth and 11th respectively. Tantino was timed in 8:58.70, while Johnson ran 9:13.99.

Villanova returns to the track on Saturday, Jan. 15 when they will compete in the Penn State Invitational.
