Robinson, Deans Dominate Triple Jump at Greater Boston

BOSTON - Jermaine Deans (Jr., Kingston, Jamaica) and Marlena Robinson (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) each captured the individual championship of the triple jump at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational, held on Jan. 18, 1998, at Harvard University in Boston.

Deans leaped to a victorious mark of 50-04.00 to win the event and record his best jump of the 1998 indoor season. Robinson, who won her third-straight triple jump this season, leaped to a standard of 39-07.50.

Villanova head track and field coach John Marshall claimed one other individual winner at the Greater Boston Invitational, newcomer Kristen Nicolini (Jr., Annapolis, Md.). Nicolini, making her debut in a Wildcat uniform after transferring to the Main Line from Auburn University in Auburn, Ala., won the open mile in 4:58.07.

There were many other outstanding performances during the meet, on both the men's and women's side. For the Wildcat women's squad, Tamieka Grizzle (So., Bronx, N.Y.) placed third in the 800m invitational in 2:13.01, while Carmen Douma (So., Cambridge, Ontario) finished second overall in 4:47.56 in the mile invitational. Ann McGranahan (Fr., Pensacola, Fla.) competed in her first-ever collegiate race, placing third in the 3000m in 9:55.16, while classmate Jessica Franks (Fr., Lansdale, Pa.) also finished third in the 800m invitational in 2:18.81.

For Marshall's men's squad, Kareem Archer (Sr., Plainfield, N.J.) competed in two events and earned runner-up honors in both. The All-American ran to a time of 21.58 in the finals of the 200m run, and clocked in at 7:35 in the 55m high hurdles. Richard Morris (Jr., Jackson, N.J.) recorded a fourth-place run in the 800m in 1:54.98, and Greg Young (So., Wakefield, Mass.) placed sixth in the 400m dash in 49.03. Coulby Dunn (Jr., Greentown, Pa.) put in another outstanding effort, placing third overall in the 3000m in 8:24.69.

The Wildcats will continue to compete during the indoor season this coming weekend at the Haverford Invitational on Jan. 25, 1998, at Haverford College.
