Brown And Flicker Win Big East Titles

May 7, 2000

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Led by the first place performances of juniors Mike Brown (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) and Barry Flicker (Pottstown, Pa.), the Villanova men's track & field team placed ninth at the 2000 Big East Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at the Bauer Track Complex on the campus of Rutgers University. Villanova finished the three-day event with 47 points. Notre Dame won the team championship with 164 points.

Brown came from behind to win the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 51.03. Trailing most of the race, Brown was able to catch Seton Hall's James Karanji down the backstretch and come away with his first Big East individual title. Karanji was timed in 51.11. Brown has now posted back-to-back 400 meter hurdle championships, as he garnered first place honors last weekend at the prestigious Penn Relays.

In the javelin, Flicker recorded a throw of 63.58m (208'07.00") to take home first place honors. Flicker had finished second the last two years at the Big East outdoor meet. Paul Mongone of Rutgers placed second in the event with a mark of 63.42m (208'01.00").

Three other Wildcats who had a strong outing this afternoon were senior Jermaine Deans (Kingston, Jamaica), sophomore Antoine Johnson (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) and freshman Tom Parlapiano (Honeybrook, Pa.). Deans tallied a second place effort in the triple jump with a leap of 15.36m. Miami's Santana Moss won the event with a jump of 15.46m. Johnson was timed in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 13.88 in the 110 meter hurdles and was credited with a third place finish. In the 1,500 meter run, Parlapiano ran a strong race to place third with a time of 3:52.17.
