Wildcat Men Place Second At Big East Track And Field Championships

The Villanova University men's track & field team recorded its highest finish since 1986 when they won the team title, as they placed second at the 2001 Big East Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Rutgers University. Villanova finished the three-day meet with 112 points. Georgetown won the conference meet with 155 points for their sixth title in the last seven years. The Wildcat women tallied a sixth place finish with 72 points. Miami won the women's championship with 104 points. Villanova was dominant in the 1,500 meter run with sophomore Adrian Blincoe and freshman Ryan Hayden finishing one-two. Blincoe was timed in 3:48.49 and Hayden crossed the line in 3:48.90. Also capturing first place honors for Villanova was senior Barry Flicker in the javelin with a throw of 65.40m. The 4 x 800 meter relay team of Brian Anderson, Jason Jabaut, Blincoe and Hayden gave Villanova its third first place finish of the day, as the foursome combined to run 7:31.33 to edge Georgetown who crossed the line in 7:31.81. Junior Antoine Johnson had an outstanding meet for Villanova. After finishing third on Saturday in the long jump, Johnson tallied a second place effort in the triple jump (15.12m) and he was fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (14.22) on Sunday. Senior Mike Brown and sophomore Jon Fasulo also scored valuable points for the 'Cats on Sunday. Brown was second in the 400 meter hurdles in 52.60, while Fasulo placed third in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:20.41. Highlighting the day for the Villanova women was senior Charmaine Walker who won her third Big East outdoor 100 meter hurdle title. Walker was timed in 13.49. Walker also competed in the 100 meter dash where she was fifth with a clocking of 11.96. In the 1,500 meter run, freshman Rebecca Mitchell ran 4:27.00 to finish just behind Georgetown's Autumn Fogg who won the event in 4:26.18 and Shannon Smith of Boston College who was second in 4:26.35.
