Women 2nd, Men 11th After Day Two of Big East Track & Field Championships

After the second day of competition at the 2002 Big East Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at the University of Connecticut, the Villanova women are tied for second place, while the Wildcat men occupy the 11th spot in the team standings.

Leading the way for the Villanova women was sophomore Carre Joyce (Charleston. S.C.) who placed second in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:46.48. Providence College junior Roisin McGettigan won the race in a time of 10:24.70. Two other Villanova performers tallying top three finishes include sophomore Michelle Ezzie (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and senior Melinda Boykin (Bridgeton, N.J.). Ezzie recorded a mark of 3.65m in the pole vault to finish third behind Erin Nett of West Virginia (3.95m) and Jamie Volkmer from the Notre Dame (3.80m). Boykin registered a throw of 47.38m to earn a third place effort in the discus. Boykin also placed eighth in the shot put competition with a throw of 13.65m.

Junior Christine Heffernan (Springfield, Pa.) also contributed in the field events for the Wildcats. Heffernan tallied a throw of 42.61m in the javelin to place sixth and she recorded a mark of 43.75m in the discus to place eighth in the event.

On the track, three Wildcat women qualified in their respective heats to advance to Sunday's finals. In the 1500 meter run, sophomore Rebecca Mitchell (Geneva, Ill.) and freshman Ioana Parusheva (Sliven, Bulgaria) both qualified for the finals. Mitchell ran 4:28.20, while Parusheva was clocked in 4:30.67. Senior Sherese Price (Pleasantville, N.J.) tallied the second fastest time (13.61) in the 100 meter hurdles to advance to the finals.

Senior Mark Blattner (Phoenixville, Pa.) paced the Villanova men with a fifth place effort in the discus and a seventh place effort in the shot put. Blattner recorded a throw of 47.48m in the discus and he had a mark of 15.73m in the shot put. Wildcat junior Pat Moore (Upper Dublin, Pa.) was 10th in the shot put event (15.28m), while junior Justin Shackleford (Silver Springs, Md.) was 12th the in the discus (44.52m).

The Villanova men had a successful day on the track with six Wildcats advancing to Sunday's Competition. In the 800 meter run, sophomores Ryan Hayden (Richmond, Canada) and Jason Jabaut (Peru, N.Y.) will run in the finals, while juniors Tom Parlapiano (Honeybrook, Pa.) and Jon Fasulo (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) will both compete in Sunday's 1,500 meter final. Sophomore sprinter Carlos Bedoya (White Plains, N.Y.) and junior Nic O'Brien (Auckland, New Zealand) both tallied the second fastest times in their events during Saturday's preliminaries. Bedoya ran 21.35 in the 200 meter dash, while O'Brien was timed in 52.52 in the 400 meter hurdles.
