Wildcat Men & Women Combine for Four Titles at Big East Outdoor Championships

Storrs, Conn. - At the 2003 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex in Storrs, Conn., the Villanova women finished tied for fifth place overall with 62 points, while the Wildcat men ended the competition in seventh place with 64 points. Villanova earned four Big East titles at the 2003 Championships with Carlos Bedoya (200m), Nic O'Brien (400m hurdles), and Tom Parlapiano (1,500m) talking the honors on the men's side, and the Wildcats 3,200m relay squad posting a Big East Championship on the women's side.
Bedoya took the title in the 200m with a time of 21.01. In the 400m hurdles, O'Brien ran a 49.90 to finish in first place. Parlapiano won the 1,500m run crossing the finish line with a winning time of 3:49.65. For the Wildcat women, the 3,200m relay team combined for a time of 8:46.89 to take the 2003 title.
Notre Dame men and Miami women collected the 2003 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field titles. Notre Dame won its second crown in four years. It was the third consecutive crown for the Hurricanes and their fifth in the past six years.
On the men's side, Notre Dame scored 139 points, just 2.5 points ahead of defending-champion Connecticut. Following Notre was Connecticut in second place (136.5), Virginia Tech (75), Rutgers (73.50), Georgetown (73), West Virginia (70) and Villanova (64). Winding down the standings were Pittsburgh (44.50), Miami (43.50), Syracuse (34), Seton Hall (33), Providence (31), St. John's (29) and Boston College (7).
Connecticut's Will Thomas earned Most Outstanding Field Performer with his third-consecutive win in the decathlon, with a meet record 7,819 points. Obra Hogans of Seton Hall earned Most Outstanding Track Performer accolades after winning the 400m with a time of 45.30.
For the women, Miami edged out runner-up Notre Dame by 40 points (166-126) to claim its fifth title overall. Notre Dame finished in second place with 126 points followed by Pittsburgh (94), Syracuse (70), Villanova (62), Georgetown (62), West Virginia (45), Rutgers (42), Boston College (38), Virginia Tech (36), Connecticut (35), Providence (34), Seton Hall (29), and St. John;s (17).
Tamara McGill of Pittsburgh earned Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Year honors with her win the heptathlon with 4,511 points. Senior Roisin McGettigan of Providence was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer for winning her third-consecutive 3,000m steeplechase crown with a time of 9:58.26, the nation's top collegiate time this year.
