VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova men's and women's track & field teams hosted the 1999 Villanova Invitational on Saturday, April 10 at Villanova Stadium on the Jumbo Elliott Track. Carrie Tollefson (Sr., Dawson, Minn.) and Charmaine Walker (So., Plainfield, N.J.) were both double winners as they accounted for four of the Villanova women's nine first place finishes. Tollefson captured the 1,500 meter run in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:23.77 and the 800 meter run in an ECAC qualifying time of 2:10.14. The time posted by Tollefson in the 1,500 meter race was the second straight week she recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying time. A week earlier at Duke, Tollefson was timed in 4:22.57. Walker was dominant in the 100 meter hurdles, winning the race in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 13.49. Walker also placed first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.77. Two other Villanova sprinters, junior Leashia Rahr (Syracuse, N.Y.) and rookie Sherese Price (Fr., Pleasantville, N.J.) earned first place finishes at the meet. Rahr ran 1:01.03 to win the 400 meter hurdles, while Price was timed in 12.21 to win the 100 meter dash. Carmen Douma (Jr., Cambridge, Ontario) continued her comeback from a leg injury, finishing second to Tollefson in both the 1,500 and 800 meter runs. She ran ECAC qualifying times of 4:31.34 in the 1,500 meters and 2:11.79 in the 800 meters. Villanova had two outstanding performances in the field events, as Sarah Hunt (Jr., Langhorne, Pa.) won the hammer with a mark of 47.20m and Melinda Boykin (Bridgeton, N.J.) placed first in the discus with a throw of 45.62m. Both Hunt and Boykin's throws met the ECAC qualifying standards. In the men's competition, three Wildcats recorded first place accolades including Antoine Johnson (Fr., Tuckahoe, N.Y.), Mike Brown (So., Mt. Holly, N.J.) and Kevin Coyne (Sr., Springfield, Va.). Johnson ran an ECAC qualifying time of 14.39 in the 110 meter hurdles to easily outdistance Penn State's Jon Kuretch who ran 15.16. In the 400 meter dash, Brown was clocked in 48.58 to narrowly defeat Munyaradzi Maraire of Penn State who recorded a time of 48.61. In the pole vault, Coyne won the event with a height of 4.44m. Scott Tantino (Jr, North Wales, Pa.) continued to run well for the Wildcats as he placed second in the 1,500 meter run in a time of 3:56.02. Also tallying second place finishes for Villanova were Ben Showers (Fr. West Chester, Pa.) in the 800 meter run (1:56.56), Ed Diaz (Sr., Staten Island, N.Y.) in the shot put with a throw of 14.26m and Mark Blattner (Fr., Phoenixville, Pa.) in the hammer with a mark of 41.58m. Next Saturday, April 17, the Wildcats will compete at the Widener Invitational in Chester, Pa.
