Wildcats Win Big East Title

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova University women's track and field team edged out the University of Miami 135-117 to win the Big East Outdoor Conference Championships. The meet was held at Villanova Stadium/Jumbo Elliott Track.

The Wildcat women collected five first-place finishes to claim the title. Villanova was led by senior Krestena Sullivan, who won the 1,500-meter run in an NCAA automatic and meet-record time of 4:18.43. Sullivan's time eclipsed the old record of 4:18.59, which was set at last season's meet by Georgetown's Miesha Marzell. The 1,500 run was a turning point for the Wildcats as they managed to earn the top four spots in the race to increase their overall lead in the team scoring. Villanova remained on top of the team standings throughout the rest of the meet.

Also recording winning marks were sophomores Jurga Marcinkevicuite (2:07.48) in the 800, Kristine Jost (9:12.36) in the 3,000 and senior Melanie Sklepko (43.28) in the javelin throw. In addition, the Wildcats' 4x800 relay team of Marcinkevicuite, Lony'e Johnson, Sullivan and Carmen Douma turned in a winning time of 8:52.11.

Villanova's team victory marks the sixth time and the first since 1989 that the women's team has won the Big East outdoor crown.

The Villanova men's team was also impressive at the Big East meet. The Wildcats scored 84 points to finish third in the 13-team conference. Georgetown won the meet with 166 points, while Notre Dame placed second with 137.

Leading the Wildcats' efforts was the outstanding performances of senior Stephen Howard. Howard won both the 1,500 (3:52.31) and 5,000 (14:21.25) runs. Other individual winners for the Wildcats were sophomore Jermaine Deans in the triple jump (15.58) and junior Kareem Archer (51.24) in the 400 intermediate hurdles.

In addition, the Villanova women's coaching staff was awarded Staff of the Year by their peers for their winning performance.
