2016 Men's Soccer Slate is Revealed
Another challenging set of 18 regular season opponents is on the docket for Villanova in 2016. The Wildcats begin the regular season on Friday, Aug. 28 vs. Rider at the Higgins Soccer Complex, where they will host nine matches this season.
Men's Track & Field Qualifies Four for NCAA East Preliminary
The accepted entries for the NCAA East Preliminary were revealed on Thursday afternoon and Villanova has four men’s track & field athletes headed to Jacksonville, Fla. to compete in the early rounds of the national championships next week. This is the third straight year that the East Preliminary meet will head to Hodges Stadium on the University of North Florida campus. The meet takes place next Thursday through Saturday, May 26-28.
Women's Soccer Announces 2016 Schedule
The Wildcats will play two exhibition games, nine out of conference, and nine BIG EAST games. Of the nine out of league teams, six qualified for the post-season last year while three went on to the NCAA Tournament. Of the 10 BIG EAST teams, Villanova will have the third strongest schedule in the conference this upcoming season based on last year's final RPI.
Villanova Swimming and Diving Announces Class of 2020
Villanova men's and women's swimming head coach Rick Simpson has announced Thursday the addition of 18 student-athletes for the 2016-17 season. Thirteen men and five women are set to join the squad next season.
Wildcats Fall 1-0 to Xavier on Lone Run in Bottom of Eighth Inning
Junior starting pitcher Hunter Schryver (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) made his final outing of the 2016 season one of his best in a head-to-head pitchers’ duel but Villanova (20-30, 5-11 BIG EAST) came out on the short end of a 1-0 decision in the opener of a three-game series versus Xavier (25-28, 12-4 BIG EAST) at Hayden Field on Thursday afternoon. The only run of the game scored on a soft flare to right-center field with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Offense Breaks Out in 15-10 Loss to Xavier on Friday Afternoon
After being shut out on just five hits in the series opener a day earlier, Villanova (20-31, 5-12 BIG EAST) scored 10 runs on 11 hits and eight walks but fell to Xavier (26-28, 13-4 BIG EAST) by a final score of 15-10 at Hayden Field on Friday afternoon. Senior first baseman Max Beermann (Tampa, Fla.) doubled, tripled and scored three runs for the Wildcats, who had all nine batters in the starting lineup reach base safely at least once.
Pierce Named Most Outstanding Track Performer at BIG EAST Championships
Freshman sprinter Sterling Pierce (Voorhees, N.J.) swept the conference titles in the 100 meters and the 200 meters, and was named the Men's Most Outstanding Track Performer as the BIG EAST Championships came to a close at the SPIRE Institute on Saturday afternoon. Villanova won six of the 15 events that were scored on the second day of the meet to finish second in the team standings with 179 points. Pierce is the Wildcats first athlete since 2007 to be named the Most Outstanding Track Performer at the outdoor conference meet.
Women's Track & Field Finishes Second at BIG EAST Championships
Four different athletes won individual events and Villanova had an impressive second place finish in the team standings as the BIG EAST Championships wrapped up at the SPIRE Institute on Saturday afternoon. In a close team race for the top three spots, the Wildcats had 179 points and beat out St. John's by three points to hang on to second place. There were only 20 points separating Marquette, Villanova and the Red Storm in the team race.
