Bella Burda Earns Capital One Academic All-District Honors
Sophomore distance runner Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) was recognized on the Capital One Academic All-District 2 squad which was announced on Thursday afternoon. The recognition includes accolades from cross country as well as the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons, and Burda will now move on to the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America consideration.
Wildcats Class of 2017 Celebrated at Annual Senior Reception
On the eve of graduation, the student-athletes of the Class of 2017 were feted at an annual reception held at the Connelly Center on Thursday evening. The collective accomplishments of the Villanova senior class were celebrated and each team’s seniors received their gifts at the awards podium. Men’s cross country athlete Patrick Tiernan and women’s swimmer Emily Mayo took home top honors as the Senior Student-Athletes of the Year, while men’s lacrosse player Michael Waterfield was the winner of the Sister Mary Margaret Cribben Award.
Women’s Track & Field Sends Four Athletes to NCAA East Preliminary
The accepted athletes for the NCAA preliminary meets were announced Thursday afternoon and Villanova will have four women’s distance runners headed to the East Preliminary meet in Lexington, Ky. next week. The regional meet runs from May 25-27 at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Complex on the Kentucky campus. Fifth-year senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) and sophomore Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) will each run the 1500 meters, while junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) and sophomore Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) are qualifiers in the 800 meters and the 10000 meters, respectively.
Men’s Track & Field: Wetzel, Lampinen Head to NCAA East Preliminary
The accepted athletes for the NCAA preliminary meets were announced Thursday afternoon and Villanova will be represented by redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.) and sophomore Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland) at the East Preliminary meet in Lexington, Ky. next week. The regional meet runs from May 25-27 at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Complex on the Kentucky campus. Wetzel is a qualifier in the 1500 meters, while Lampinen will compete in the 800 meters for the second straight year.
Curran, Froccaro, and Sweeney to Play in North South Game
Graduate student Jack Curran and seniors Jake Froccaro and Danny Sweeney were selected to the 76th annual United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) North South Game on Friday, May 26th. It will represent the final collegiate game for the three Wildcats as the suite up for the Division I/II South Team. The new was announced via a press release by the USILA.

Junior catcher Doug deMarrais (Bernardsville, N.J.) was named the Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week as announced by Big 5 baseball committee this morning.
Baseball Closes the Season on a High Note, Tops No. 20 St. John’s, 9-6
Freshman relief pitchers Ryan Pfutzenreuter (Deerfield, Ill.) and Tyler Arella (East Northport, N.Y.) combined to pitch four hitless innings of relief and Villanova (14-33, 5-13 BIG EAST) and the offense mounted a pair of big rallies to overcome No. 20 St. John’s (40-9, 13-5 BIG EAST) by a final score of 9-6 at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win is the first over a ranked opponent since 2012 for the Wildcats, who closed out the 2017 season on a high note. Villanova overcame deficits of 3-0 and 6-4 in the game, and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.
Pfutzenreuter Earns a Spot on BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
